Milton Carter continually eyed Rebecca from across the table as they ate lunch. He and his wife, Pamela, had picked up the young Amish woman from the train station two days before and had agreed to let her stay with them for a while as she planned her short-term future. Rebecca immediately felt comfortable with the couple, both in their mid-fifties. Milton was a surveyor for Chester County and Pamela took care of the house. Their only child, a daughter named Hannah, was currently at Penn State and the Carters seemed to enjoy Rebecca’s company.

That morning Pamela had taken Rebecca to town and helped her buy her first pair of jeans, a couple of T-shirts, and some comfortable flats. She had also purchased a bra and several pairs of modest cotton underwear. There had been other choices, but she couldn’t imagine being comfortable in skimpy panties.

Pamela had dropped Rebecca off at the house and continued on to a ladies group luncheon. Rebecca went straight to Hannah’s old room, now the guest bedroom, to try on her new clothes. She looked at herself in the mirror. Though the pink T-shirt wasn’t tight, it certainly showed off her body more than her plain cotton dresses had. And the jeans were tight, at least to Rebecca. She felt very removed from the Amish. Though she wore no makeup, with her long auburn hair spilling over her breasts she could easily pass among the English.

Milton looked a bit stunned when Rebecca walked into the kitchen to help make lunch. To that point, he’d only seen her in her Amish clothing. Now at the table, he couldn’t stop sneaking looks. Finally, he spoke up. “Do you mind if I asked why you felt the need to leave the Amish for a while?” he asked.

Rebecca took a long look at Milton, eventually deciding to be honest with him, since he and his wife had been so kind. “I didn’t choose to leave,” she answered. “The elders suggested I live outside for six months to decide if Amish life is the right choice for me.”

“That seems odd. You’re no teenager,” Milton said.

“I violated the Amish code of conduct,” Rebecca confessed. Milton gave her a confused look. She took a deep breath, then said, “I had physical relations with a young Amish man.”

Milton’s surprise was evident. Rebecca quickly added, “Not complete physical relations. But to the Amish, any such contact is considered sinful.”

“I see,” Milton said. A long silence passed before he spoke up again, saying, “Do you believe what you did was wrong?”

“I understand it was not in keeping with proper Amish behavior,” Rebecca replied, “but I find difficulty in believing anything that results in such pleasure could be against the will of God.” With that, the subject was dropped.

After lunch, Rebecca was lying on the bed in her room watching television, amazed by the sheer number of programs available, when Milton knocked. On Rebecca’s answer, he opened the door and took a step in. “Pamela tells me you don’t have much money,” he said.
